Hey!  Welcome to BookNinjas.

So you want to know a little about the site,  huh?  Well, first of all, I’m glad you’re here.  I  hope you find something of interest and maybe even a tip or two that’s useful to you.  If you do, I’d love to hear about it.

Make groovy comments to your hearts content.  I’d love it.   The only thing I ask is that you be respectful of other readers.  Swear at me if you must,  but leave other readers alone, okay?   In return,  I promise I won’t let them ream  you either.   Sound good?  Perfect.  Moving right along…

About the blog

When I first became interested in blogging, of course I toured the internet and read as many blogs as possible.  During my travels,  I couldn’t t help noticing how many ”Gurus” and “Ninjas”  there were out there.  Naturally, I wanted to be one too, but alas, I did not know how to “create a killer wordpress theme”, or “Use SEO tweaks to revive  dead blog  posts”.

Then I figured, all you really need to be a good Ninja is like a sword and a mask, and to really, really know what you’re talking about.   So on a Tuesday afternoon I ran  out and picked up that sword and mask, and a pair of numchucks and a blowgun for good measure.    I wrote my first post about a topic that I know and love …. books.  With that,  BookNinjas was born.

About me

I knew how to read when I was born.   I swear I did.  I do not ever remember not being able to read anything I wanted.  I took this for granted most of my life, until I became a teacher and realized how incredibly lucky I am.

I was THAT kid in elementary school; you know the one,  the sanctimonious “good reader”.  When the teacher was calling on students to read, my hand was so high in the air, I’m surprised I didn’t pull a muscle.  If a slo-o-w reader got called on, I rolled my eyes in disdain and could not understand why they were chosen when MY hand was up.  Ugh.   I’ve since seen the error of my ways.

Nowadays,  I’m more into promoting reading and books to everyone.  I am convinced that people who don’t like to read are just reading the wrong things.  My mission is to help them find those books or mediums which will encourage their love of reading.

Connecting with people who are already book lovers makes me giddy.  Nothing would make me happier than living my life as if it were one giant book club.

The other goal I have for this project is to urge people to get the books out of their basement, and donate them.  As a teacher of struggling readers and writers, I met so many kids who did not have books of their own, or even access to them.  Books are meant to be read and shared and discussed and appreciated.  Storing them in a basement so long that they smell like cat litter is just not the best use for them,  and all of us with those boxes and boxes of books in the basement know  it.

Believe me, I know how hard it is to let go of your books.  I have happily donated my kids clothes and toys without a second thought, but I have not parted with a single book.  I have years and years of books gathering dust and I know I need to part with them so they can live on in the hands of another child, but I’m not there yet.  I’m hoping we can work on that together.   I hope you’ll join me.

In case this was not the information you were hoping for when you clicked on the “About” page, I leave you with this list of 10 things you may want to know about me before reading my blog.

1. I have 3 kids.  That’s the most important thing about me.  ( One husband too, but ehh, not my flesh and blood)

2. I love animals, sometimes more than people.   I would love to rescue each and every critter that does not have a home, but I’m doing my best with the five I do have.  A person can only do so much.

3. I drink too much Diet Coke, but I don’t plan to stop anytime soon.  It’s the only real vice I have, and without it I could become intolerably boring.

4. I use emoticons – frowned upon in some circles I know, but I am who I am,  and I find them very cute.

5.  When I’m with my friends, I swear a lot.  I find good curse words to be some of the best words we have in certain situations (your shithead kids left a bunch of sucker sticks under the bed again, some asshole co-worker complained to the boss about you,  Jesse Ventura was the most embarrassing f-ing governer ever).  Ahhh, I thought I would be able to type the actual “F” word.  When I finally can, I will for sure consider it a sign of growth.

6.  I believe in simplicity in life, but if I had more money, I would probably be a total capitalist pig infidel.

7. I grew up in a huge, sprawling, loud, dysfunctional  family that did not have two nickels to rub together.

8.  My parent’s were divorced before divorce was cool.

9.  I am both very cynical and sappy at the same time.

10. I am on the express train to heaven because my Grandparents were the the best 2 people to ever walk the face of the earth.   It’s good to have connections.

Disclaimer

Some time soon, I will be adding some affiliate links to the site where you will be able to purchase books and other cool products right here at BookNinjas.com.  I will be paid a percentage of that sale as a referral fee.  If you are planning on buying that product anyway, I would be tickled if you would consider purchasing it here.  That will give me all kinds of time to review books and do-dads for you, instead of worrying about a pesky job to feed my kids.
